Scrimshaw
'If people can have a whale of a time, can whales have a human of a time?'
Diepseun.
Scrimshaw was an art form much practiced in the 18th Century by sailors on board whaling ships. It involved carving into whalebone and walrus tusks with a sail needle or knife-tip, then blackening the carved designs. True Scrimshaw has great visual and tactile appeal, but it is environmentally damaging. Today Feathers once again brings to life this ancient art form, carving not in ivory, but in environmentally acceptable substitutes.
